Book review - Woodpeckers of the World

A few days ago a beautiful book was delivered to my front door, Woodpeckers of the Word, by Gerard Gorman.
Firstly, I was amazed that there are 239 species of Woodpeckers on this planet. I had no idea how widespread, similar , and yet different each species was, in all corners of the globe.

The book starts off with the taxonomy, anatomy, habit and breeding information that one would expect from a lavish book devoted to a single species.  It leaves no stone unturned, and is richly detailed in all aspects, from describing what they eat, their behavior, their calls, and what woodpeckers are most notorious for - their drumming!

Of course, a book this detailed, has to have photos, and boy does it have some great ones, spread throughout the 529 pages.

You'll see species such as the common Downy Woodpecker of North America, to the stunning Woodpeckers of the tropics, and mentions of the fabled maybe-extinct species the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, and the World's largest, Imperial Woodpecker.

Its a thick, heavy book, but its one that you will turn to again and again, even just to look through the stunning photos, and if you are ever curious about what woodpecker lives in a certain country, then, you'll find it in this book.

I highly recommend it!

Christmas Bird Counts and Winter Catch-up

Greetings friends,

Like every year, I enjoy taking part in Christmas Bird Counts .
A practice which has gone on since 1900.

Here in Saskatchewan as most of you will know, we get some bitterly cold winters. This can either 'make or break' a good count day, sometimes the worst weather might bring in the most species, and also the rarest.
This year I took part in 9 seperate counts, saw some great birds, and took a few photos while I was at it.

Here are some recent ones :
Great Horned Owl
