Great Egret

Well, no sooner had I 'netted' another lifer with the Little Gull out at Radisson Lake, somebody very kindly alerted me to the presence of a Great Egret lurking at a reservoir in Rosthern.
Yesterday,  2 friends and I managed to see this handsome bird while it stood, lunged, and fished for sticklebacks in a creek. This is very late for this species, and we don't get too many in the area anyway, so it was a real nice treat to see such a beautiful bird in October, and now I get to finally add one to my life-list!

Here's a quick photo :

Fall Birds

Greetings friends ,

Its been a busy couple of months since my last posting, with some nice birds and wildlife to photograph in the Autumn colours. Fall birding is always a treat here.
There was some excitement in our neck of the woods when a rare Little Gull was spotted by a visiting birder from Ontario. A couple of days later, and a friend of mine went off in search of the gull, and managed to see it winging its way across Radisson Lake looking for food. Very cool! The photo is posted below.
The backyard has been as busy as ever this season, with almost 60 different species stopping by since the end of August!
Some highlights include :
Cape May Warbler, Chestnut-sided Warbler, Mourning Warbler, Wilson's Warbler, American Redstart, Fox Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, Golden-crowned Kinglet , Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Merlin, Cooper's Hawk, Purple Finch and Common Yellowthroat, to name but a few!

A recent visit to Last Mountain Lake, also yielded me my closest photo of a Belted Kingfisher, and some long-sought after flight shots of Bank Swallow.

My 2014 Saskatchewan Birds Calendar is finished, and will be ready to print soon, so anybody wanting to reserve copies early can contact me whenever they wish.
I will also make previews of each page available to those who want them. Price is still $20.00 plus shipping, or free to pickup.
I will be making a separate blog post soon advertising this new calendar.

I hope you enjoy this new update!

Spring and Summer Catch-Up!

Well, this year has proved to be another busy one, hence the lack of regular updates posted on the blog in a few months. Before spring arrived, a friend and I ventured north and had some wonderful interactions with Great Gray and Northern Hawk Owls. Also, in March, a Boreal Owl visited a backyard feeder here in Saskatoon, causing some excitement. During April and May I photographed some spring arrivals, and in June I traveled to Grassland's National Park where I finally got photos of a lifer bird I had wanted for a long time, a McCown's Longspur. I hope you enjoy some of the new photos posted here :
